Functional Patterns

Functional Patterns

This modality hasn’t received enough credit through my blog. It’s another regimen that my wife introduced me too and I’m very grateful that she did. Functional patterns, or FP for short, has revolutionized my thinking on bodybuilding. Institutionalized in Hawaii by Naudi Aguilar, this methodology has really taken off in the last few years. FP stresses the human body’s ability to make change without pain. As with anything in life, the results don’t come easy; you have to have the right mindset and motivation.

My first experience with FP was with Danny and the team at FP NJ. Danny was able to change my physique and my knowledge of body building radically. After college, I would take the daily pilgrimage to the gym rotating between back and biceps, chest and triceps, and the dreaded leg day. I saw some beneficial results in my body’s build, but nothing compared to the strength built through functional patterns. FP was a game-changer.

I started going to Danny’s gym in NJ 3x a week. It was roughly a half-hour away but well worth the journey. First, Danny would give me a myofascial release massage, a staple of FP, which, although it hurts like hell, has been the best thing for loosening my tight muscles. After the release therapy, we would focus on strength exercises. These were tough and non-traditional, but focused on muscles for functional tasks. Not having great balance currently and a non-functional left arm made things adventurous, but Danny always found a way for me to complete the exercises.

Upon moving from NJ, I had to find a new functional patterns trainer. Danny put me in touch with this trainer Jan whom I now see once a week. I also plan on hopefully getting my own functional pattern pulley system one day to continue workouts at home. There is a several-week course that my wife dove into in order to assist me. Tina also participated in FP in NJ. Tina saw Danny’s girlfriend for training once a week. The whole point of FP is building strength to complete functional tasks. I honestly feel it has been the best thing I have done physically so far.

Walking again is my biggest goal. I work every day to regain this. It’s currently my full-time job. Functional Pattern workouts are aiding me in achieving this. The strength and mindset I’m gaining through FP is invaluable.
